The story of Persol eyewear goes all the way back to 1917, in a small courtyard in Via Caboto. It was here that Giuseppe Ratti, photographer and owner of Berry Opticians, began to make technically advanced Persol glasses, designed to meet the demands of pilots and sports drivers. He began developing frames that integrated comfort, protection and optimum vision. Persol from “per il sole” meaning “for the sun”, highlights their function of protection against the sun’s rays.
Persol models were infamous throughout the 1950s. Model 649 (built for tram drivers to protect their eyes from dust) became so successful that it was copied numerous times by competitors. It also had a celebrity debut when worn by Marcello Mastroianni in the film “Divorce Italian Style”.
The brand went from strength to strength throughout the 1980s, testing their innovative technology and materials on numerous exhibitions in extreme weather conditions. Persol has now become iconic and remain in the forefront of eyewear technology. They are no stranger to celebrities too, personalising very successful models for Italian actress Ornella Muti (830 model) and super model, Carol Alt (853 model). More recently, they have bought out a new personalised frame for Steve McQueen.
