Eyecare throughout your life

The need for regular eye examinations

Throughout our lives our eyes and eyesight are constantly changing so it is important for continued visual experience, clarity and comfort that any changes in correction, condition or health problems are identified and the correct solution is quickly found.

With over 20 years of experience of building long-term relationships with our customers, we can adapt their eyecare as it changes throughout their lives.

Surveys regularly show the common eye complaints that people experience. Tired eyes are usually the most common eye care complaint followed by hay fever and sore eyes. Also, 20 million Brits risk avoidable sight loss because they fail to have regular sight tests. and one in ten British adults have NEVER had an eye examination. Not only that, but 85% admit to having problems with their vision.

In a recent Eyecare Trust survey, 69% of Optometrists reported that they regularly saw patients with some form of eye infection and highlighted how patients presenting with AMD, glaucoma and dry eye had all risen significantly in recent years.

We now highlight the five phases of eyecare:

Birth to 10, The Early Development Years

It is very important to have your child’s eyes examined regularly from an early age, because any problems can be picked up and corrected whilst the visual system is developing. We recommend testing in our practices from around 4 years old when a child can contribute to the examination, but any concerns before this age should be raised with the Health Visitor or G.P.

There are many aspects of vision that affect a child’s ability to respond to a teacher’s instruction. Uncorrected vision that results in blurred vision or eyestrain may lead to poor performance in the classroom, on the playing field or even in building good social relationships outside school.

It is also important that children have protection from the harmful effects of Ultra Violet light which could lead to eye health problems later in life.

Birth to 10, The Early Development Years

Our visual system changes rapidly during this period. As our bodies grow we can often record rapid changes in prescription, perhaps needing correction for the first time. Teenagers spend long hours under visual stress on computers, smartphones and Playstation as well as school study in preparation for exams.

By carrying out an eye examination we can assess any problems. We will then help choose the most appropriate solution, this could be contact lenses for certain sporting performing activities, or a wide range of spectacle frames including the latest designer ranges.

NHS FUNDED EYE EXAMINATIONS are available for every child and young person up to the age of 19 when in full time education. Simply contact us and book an appointment for your child today

20 to 39, The Early Work Years

As we progress through life it is important to realise how our eyesight can change, in many instances without realising how it is affecting us. Conditions often include uncorrected Myopia (short-sightedness) or Hyperopia (far-sightedness) and can result in eyestrain while working on computers, smartphones, tablets, driving, enjoying sporting activities, cinema and theatre.

It is very important to have regular eye examinations so that any problem can be identified at an early stage and proper correction made. Plus you may find that you need different eyewear for certain activities such as driving, sun-protection, swimming, golf, skiing and racket sports.

This is an ideal time in life to try contact lenses; we supply all the latest types including daily, fortnightly or monthly disposable lenses, gas permeable and lenses for astigmatism. We have an Contact Lens Care Plans which offer a whole range of benefits all for one monthly, Direct Debit payment

40 to 59 The Mid-life Years

For the majority of people as they get older their eyesight begins to show small signs of deterioration, sometimes without them being aware of it. A lot of people will find carrying out simple tasks like reading and driving become more difficult from their mid-forties due to natural changes in the visual system. This condition is called “Presbyopia” which derives from the Greek for “ageing sight”. When it becomes apparent it is essential to choose an experienced Optician who can offer the correct advice.

At Paul Verity Opticians we carry out thorough eye examinations so any problems are identified and the best correction is applied. Each time we see you (usually every two years) tests designed to check for conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes, age-related macular degeneration will be carried out.

It may be that your first reading glasses are the simple solution or it’s time to try varifocals for added convenience ensuring that you can see clearly at all distances. Transitions Crizal premium adaptive lenses will provide glare protection in all situations. Some people may require different spectacles for different activities such as driving or sports when polarised, prescription sunglasses are an excellent solution.
